Whistle Stop
Thirty seconds ago White Forest was being destroyed with unthinkable thunder and fire from the skies.
That was then.
WHOMP!
This is now. And it has gone very, very quiet.

It'd be a moderately respectable mountain in most of the rest of the Eastern Seaboard.
"That sucker's shot full of more caves'n tunnels than you could shake a shotgun at. Couple of 'em're big enough to hide a boat that size in, if she's good enough at pinpointing and she don't mind bein' indoors."

"Okay. We need to contact the locals, explain the situation..."

Despite it being full daylight, at least three or four other 'owls' answer back from the hillside.

"Bet you a bottle of beer there's at least five more where we can't see 'em," Dan murmurs. "You wanna say hi or do I go first?"

"Dan Shephard," Dan calls back. "Jerry, we got some serious problems away up north. You got to go send someone'n tell my momma we're about doublin' in size, and then you got to find somewheres Ms. Vance can fit the boat."
There's a moment's unheard discussion between the figures on the hillside. Then two of them run off, upward through the trees, and vanish somewhere between one clump of brush and the next.
"Thanks, Jer'."
Jerry comes a little further down the slope towards the boat. He's bundled up against the cold, but he's got a lot of lines to his face, a chapped-looking beak of a nose, and a pair of bright blue eyes. "No problem," he says to Dan. To Alyx he says, "Welcome to West Virginia, Ms. Vance. Sorry 'bout the introduction, but we weren't exactly expectin' guests."

A little while later there's motion up the slope, and a few more figures scramble out into the wintry landscape. One's a little shorter and rounder than the others, and dressed in brown.

"You folks gonna need parking space for that boat of yours?" comes Kate's voice. "There's a sheltered spot up stream a ways if you c'n clear the riverbottom. Should be good for a day or two."

Jerry nods and heads off. He eventually returns with the rest of the grey-clad patrol and what might've once been some form of ramp or something used in mining. "This ought to do it," he says. "Let's get you folks set up now..."
