The Reception

In the depths of the bunker beneath the Greenbrier Resort Hotel is a massive, columned room, intended to be used to hold sessions of Congress in the event of a nuclear war.

Today, it's being put to a very different and much less somber purpose.

The wedding is over; the party has begun.

"Uh, Doc?" Alyx calls. "You're holding up the line..."

"Oh dear. Terribly sorry." Dr. Kleiner clears his throat. "A pleasure to meet you, Voodoo."

"Likewise, Doc."

"I think this is where I'm supposed to say hello," says Ellen, "since I was in the bridal party too. Hi, Voodoo."

"Hey, Ellen. Reception treating you alright so far?"

Ellen nods. "It's kind of a new experience for me, but yes. Hopefully the present I brought them will go over okay..."

"Why, what'd you get?"

"A robot. A Mr. Handy like the one that came with my house. This one's name is Godfrey and I had to spend several days working on him to get him into working order and take out the flamethrower."

"Huh."

"Better than mine, I guess."

"But did you have to take out the flamethrower?"

"I left her the instructions on how to reinstall one," says Ellen. "When it's safer to have a flame weapon around the kids she can re-add it."

"Huh. I just got two baby onesies with the biohazard symbol on them."

"That's better than I would've been able to get if I had to get clothing," says Ellen. "Baby clothes in the Wasteland tend to be sewn from scraps, most of the time."

"Ain't surprised," Voodoo says. "What with your lack of industry and all. No offense."

"None taken," Ellen says. "We're working on it."

Voodoo nods. "You ever need any help, all I need is five minutes' notice."

The last person in line is... well, not a person, technically.

"Greetings to the Voodoo."

'The Voodoo'.

He likes it. Even if it sounds like something out of a monster truck rally.

It's got a ring to it.

"Likewise, uh..."

He saw vortigaunts in Mongolia, but this is the first time he's actually gotten the chance to talk to one.

"This one has no appellation," it says, serenely. "We have no need for individual identifiers among our own kind."

"So I just call you 'vortigaunt'?"

"If you must."

Voodoo shrugs. "Okay. So whatcha doing here?"

"The Freeman asked this one to act as a groomsman for the human ceremony of binding," it replies. "We confess we do not fully understand the necessity of our presence."

Voodoo laughs at that. "Shit, I don't understand half of all this pomp and circumstance stuff. Ain't ever been a wedding kinda guy."

The Vort cants its head to one side. "We were given to understand that the ceremony is only performed once."

Voodoo shrugs. "Depends. Some people only do it once. Some people do it once, get divorced, and do it again. Sometimes with the same couple, sometimes with other people. It's complicated as all fuck."

"'Complicated as fuck,'" it repeats. "If you find copulation so complex, it is remarkable that your species has thrived for so long."
